Why did she do it? The full dose?


Did she put herself through a living hell before dying because:
1..There was no hope, may as well try?
2..Even if there is no hope, someone else may benefit?
3..That was the only way she knew how to face life? Head on?

As far as #2, I don't see her as particulary unselfish, but as an academic, she could appreciate the value of a good experiment

You pretty much hit it on the nose when you said she was an academic.

Vivian's professor instilled this ethic into her when she reprimanded Vivian's report on Donne. Prof. Ashford said, (maybe paraphrased) "The effort has to be total for the result to me meaningful." Then the scene cuts back to Viv in the present where she said, "Right. Give me the full dose."
