A very good movie but .....

I never want to watch this movie again. The film itself is emotionally demanding and her portrayal of the cancer patient was too riveting. Nevertheless a good film.

All true. But this is a film I can see returning to at different points in my life, especially as I get older and face the awfulness of the end.

I personally think that it is a film that every woman should see. If for no other reason, then to make her contemplate the decisions that she would wish to make (not need to make) should this happen to her. It makes you seriously wonder if the treatment is worse than the disease itself. I know that in the 80s and 90s, women were desperate to find a way to live. I know two women who died of cancer (one ovarian). These were women I'd grown up with. They were around my mother's age. They couldn't be more different from each other. One had a true zest for life, enjoying every minute of it, while the other seemed to never find a moment's happiness. Both are gone now from their cancer. Both, I believe, sought treatment.

I don't know the stage at which each was diagnosed, but regardless, and certainly after watching this movie, it makes me question what I would do should I be diagnosed with cancer, and how aggressive the cancer was, whether or not I would choose to treat it, or whether I would try to just accept it, and choose to die with some form of dignity. I know that I don't ever want to spend my final days in a cold, clinical hospital, sick more from the supposed treatments coursing through my veins, rather than the disease itself. In my opinion, no one should have to spend their end days in a hospital. They should be at home, in a peaceful setting if that is their choice.

You may not watch the film again; once is enough. Still this shan't protect you from living it from either the bed or the bedside. Like the circuitous study of the sonnet it is easy to become obsessed by the relentless path of distraction that leads to the only possible end.
