Why did anais (spoiler)...

...say what she did at the end of the movie? Why did she say she wasn't raped and then say something like, "You don't have to believe me if you don't want to." I didn't get that part.

PS. I really liked this movie!

I CHOSE NOT TO CHOOSE LIFE.

Because that guy was her hero, but you don't have to believe me if you don't want to.

The DVD version of this film is cut in the UK, but apparently the original film contains a moment of 'knowing' between Anais and her assailant.

Throughout the film Anais has sung about her desire to be 'torn apart' (having her heart pecked at by birds on a windowsill etc), and claimed she'd rather lose her virginity to a stranger. So she is definitely rather mixed up, and her confused statement at the end ('he didn't do it... or did he?') is part of her messed up childhood thinking. She has just been raped, most of her family killed, and she's in a state of confusion.

I think you give the director too much credit. I think it's the director who's in a state of confusion. The ending totally blew. A more realistic ending would have been for Anais to get out of the car to say she had to go to the bathroom, and sneak off to the trucker, have sex with him, and accomplish what SHE wanted to accomplish -- rebel, lose her virginity to someone she didn't love, end of story. The way THIS movie ended was totally preposterous. (Not the LEAST of which being that she wasn't killed along with her mother and sister. It just made no sense whatsoever, and ruined an otherwise interesting film.)
