whats the deal with the ring?

i had really bad subtitles.

so fernando never actually loved her? he just wanted her for sex?

if he gave her a ring, how is it wrong that she accepts it? and the mother has to come to "reclaim" it? it doesnt make sense to me. what? she can't accept something tahts expensive? is that bad manners?!

and how does having a ring automatically makes her parents think she had sex with him?

also: why does anais say at the end that he didnt rape her?

Fernando had stolen the ring from his mother and made up the fact that his grandmother had given it to him. He took advantage of Elena's trust and seduced through the ring and its implicit connotations of marriage and love, which he only wanted to give off to get into Elena's pants. Notice that it is not he that goes back to ask for the ring, but his mother. He does not even have the decency to own up to the fact that he was only interested in sexual conquest.

As for why that inherently means that the parents know they had sex, I can't say. I think that their mother says that Elena will have to get checked out is merely because of the boy's huge age difference in relation to her. I could be way off base though.

My take on the end is that Anais doesn't feel that she has been raped. She had stated previously that she wanted her first time to be with someone that she didn't love, so that afterward, there would be no feelings of "do I love him? does he love me?". It would just be understood that neither person loved the other. So, in a way when a complete stranger has sex with her, she's getting what she wants out of the situation as well.

Well you said that a lot better than the botched version in that other thread that angered everyone.

I will watch the film again and report back about the ring. I remember finding the ring thing odd/not getting it.

But can't remember what happens somehow.

All that Alex wrote about the ring was correct. Although, I wouldn't emphasize the fact that it wasn't Fernando but his mother who demanded the ring to be returned. In fact, I think he maybe didn't care for Elene too much, but didn't care for his family any more - or cared even less, so he maybe found that Elene deserved to keep the ring because she gave him more than his family did. And I don't mean it in sexual way (I'm sure you know it, but there are a lot of people who would gladly attack me if I didn't make it clear). His mother's behaving, and the fact that they were spending holiday in the same place can make us conclude that Fernando's family was no better than Elena's. With Elena he made a sexual relation, with his family he probably made no relation at all, so he didn't find any reason to care for the family feelings about the ring.

If you look at the rape scene in the end, she already acts very receptive towards the killer/rapist, she doesn't scream, she doesn't try to defend herself, but actually shows, that she's enjoying it, and only asks the rapist one thing: "Does it hurt?". ;)

Fernando was a horrible, horny male who wanted to use a young pretty girl for sexual conquest. He knew she was sensitive and loved him, so he stole the ring from his mother (not caring how it affected his mom, cuz he's SELFISH) and gave it to her so she would trust him enough to have sex with him. Pretty straight forward.

I speak English, maybe my subtitles are wrong.

When Fernando's mother comes to pick-up the ring, she said she carries costume as well as real jewelry.

I think Fernando thought he took one of her costume rings which could be easily replaced. Personally, I think he used this trick often with younger girls. This time not knowing the difference, he took a ring with more value.

While watching the scene where Elena showed the ring to Anais, I thought Fernando bought it from a shop in town. I thought the next day Anais would find a duplicate ring being sold in the shop and prove to Elena that she was naïve. I think the director made it obvious that the ring would not be real, especially since young Anais knew something is fishy. But surprise the ring was real; the mother wanted it back.

Someone in one of the other comments stated that maybe Fernando felt coldness from his family. This made him connect with Elena. When the mother comes to get the ring, it could be construed that she cared about her ring more than her son. By her coming to get the ring, her son could face a rape charge.
