Bumping into Mark Darcy

I'm watching this film again at the moment and hadn't thought about this before. Isn't it odd that Bridget is introduced to Mark at a party and then keeps bumping into him afterwards? You would have thought that she'd have done so before the party and then recognised him there.

I'm guessing that Mark was besotted and kept on engineering opportunities to see her but even so, it's a bit of a stretch how many times they cross paths. Especially at a fairly intimate dinner party. Strange that they have friends in common and she didn't know him before.

What do you think?

In the story Darcy and Daniel Cleaver are both supposed to be Cambridge graduates. I suppose some of the other characters who were journalists and other London professional types might have been first acquainted at university. Hence they might occasionally dine together. Just a thought...

Absolutely but when she's introduced to him at her mother's party, she acts as though she doesn't recognise him. Wouldn't they have been to the same dinner parties previously?

In the book, he had just moved back from America after divorcing his wife. They hadn't seen each other since childhood, which is why Bridget was surprised to find him attractive. For all intents and purposes, I guess it's supposed to be the same regarding the film.

Thanks Swhiteism!

That actually makes sense now. It isn't explained in the film and probably should be. I actually read the book too but it was ages ago and I didn't remember about him being in America.

I had the same thought while watching lol. Is GB that small that they all know each other. Even Perpetua knew Natasha! Even if Mark was in America, I find it weird that they hadn't seen each other in that long considering how connected their social circle was.

I also found it odd that Mark's family would associate with Bridget's, whom he clearly looked down on. His family seemed a bit more upscale, much like Mark, than Bridget's. Also I would imagine the mother's affair would create a scandal in their social circle. Yet, the parents went to the anniversary party like nothing happened and nobody seemed to react to the reunion.
