It always amazes me when writers bite the hands that feed them by harming and even killing a very popular character because fans had the audacity to like that character more than the character the author chose to make the main character. And I do think Darcy is more popular than Bridget herself and as a result, the book and movie are gonna flop big time without him.

I'm actually shocked that she went down this road...

Have you guys finish the book? I did and still think Mark Darcy death was unnecessary, I think she could've written a book where Mark was alive and still found funny situations for her. Like maybe they got divorece and Bridget is trying to date other people, or they're still togheter but never got married or something.
I'm 31 y/o no child woman so maybe when I'm 51 like Bridget I would identify better with this book, but for now one and two are my favorities.

I finished it, found it enjoyable but not in the same league as the first two - it's a shame about Darcy, and that the book couldn't have tried something different to Bridget being single again, but then if it strayed too far from that theme it wouldn't feel like it fitted in with the series I suppose. Kind of hoping they don't base the third film on the book though, although what with Renée having cosmetic surgery recently, will she even be cast as Bridget again?
shareI've found the solution should they make a third movie. Why not bring back Darcy as a ghost who guides and mentors Bridget? Or failing that, use him as a voice-over throughout the movie. Either has endless possibilities....
shareThat would, for sure, be a very different movie to the first two... but the voiceover surely has to be Bridget reading her diary entries!
shareBridget’s diary entries were never meant for public consumption. They were to be read over to herself, perhaps at a later date. Therefore, as this dialogue takes place in her head, it seems quite appropriate that Darcy could interject comments as she reads.
I can think of other places where this sort of dialogue works perfectly well. Yes, it’s all in the mind, so it is important that she seeks advice and companionship from the urban friends as well.
That's the dumbest thing she could have done. Why the fuvk couldn't she just have them be divorced or even had it so they just weren't able to make it work and broke up a long while ago? She did not need to kill him off. Mark was the best thing about the series and she just ruined it. I'm upset about this beyond a reasonable measure. So stupid!

i've not read the book yet but i can imagine there is an unnecessary space where darcy used to be in it. i can't quite see him not being in bridget's life at this point

let's not go to camelot, it is a silly place
I agree that Mark's the best thing about both the books and the movies, and that i sometimes find Bridget extremely irritating. Without Mark as a serious but loving foil for Bridget's flightiness, i'm not interested in either the third book or another movie. I'm done with Bridget Jones.
