Accent
I'm American and thought her accent was spot on. What did Brits think
shareI meet a lot of other British people who seem to want to be deliberately contrary and churlish about the whole thing and say "Pffft, her accent wasn't THAT good" but I can assure you, as a Brit, it was very, very good. I would never, EVER have guessed Renee wasn't English.
Having said that, once you know she's American and you listen REALLY closely, you can hear (extremely rarely) the odd sound or vowel that isn't quite right, but still it doesn't sound American.
She nailed it, basically :)
I'm English and I agree that she's spot on
shareWhen she made this film, she stayed in her English accent 24/7. She came to London and took a job in advertising or publishing for a few weeks before filming started. Hugh Grant did not know she was American until filming was over and they were at the wrap party. She started talking in her natural accent. Hugh Grant says he was blown away and had no idea that she was not English.
I thought she was fantastic. It was Renee Zellweger at her most appealing.
She's 46 now and I doubt she will gain the weight back. She's also had work done on her face. I wish they had never had sequels. The first film was wonderful and it would have been nice if it had just been that one film (the sequel was horrendous and unwatchable).
I do love Patrick Dempsey, so maybe he will breathe some life into this 3rd one.
Remember us, for we too have lived, loved and laughed
I wonder why she didn't gain weight for the new one she must have got tired gaining weight again.
shareI like Renee and gladly take any accents she has, but to me her British accent is not that British, no.
I am very fond of the British accent, probably that is why I am very keen on this subject.
I knew NOTHING about Renee Zellweger before I watched this movie. So I was absolutely blown away when I heard her talking in her normal voice on an American daytime talk show (I believe it was Oprah) promoting her film.
I also had no clue she put on 2 stone (I believe that's about 25 pounds) for her portrayal of Bridget either. She was talking on the talk show about getting back into shape and loosing the weight she put on, then she ended up having to do it all again in 3 years for the sequel "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason"
Either way I had NO CLUE she wasn't British, so she definitely had me fooled. They couldn't have picked a better actress for the role of Bridget. She's such a lovable and relatable character!
I'm very excited to see the new Bridget Jones film "Bridget Jones's Baby"
I know Hugh Grant won't be back portraying his role as Daniel Clever. So I really hope his replacement Patrick Dempsey (who I just assume is his replacement, no one really knows for sure yet) can carry a strong British accent like Hugh has. I've never heard Patrick act using any accent other than American, so I'm definitely looking forward to seeing if he can carry it off as easy as Renee can.
