Book Ending please -

How does the book end? Iam one of those weird people that reads the end first and looks up endings of movies ;) anyone who read the book, please tell me the differences and ending.

Thanks!

I just finished reading the book (which is a MILLION times better than the movie...the movie ruins the book sadly)....and it ends with Josephine and Roux hooking up, not Vianne and Roux...which the movie displays. The last chapter is all about the Chocolate Festival....and then Guillame brings Vianne a letter from Armande, which thanks her for all she did for her. Armande also gives Vianne two gold rolling coins...and tells her to give one to Anouk and one to her next child...assuming she will have another child. Then, she settles in with Anouk, and sings to her, and thats pretty much the ending. They stay in Lanquenet.

You're absolutely right, the book was so much better. It worked better because Reynaud's confession to the hospitalised priest allowed us to empathise with him too. But on the other hand, he was a much stronger character in the book. He actually became enemies with Vianne, but in the film his character (who is now the mayor instead, for some reason) actually isn't that unkind, he's just a bit of an annoyance to her.

Maybe I would have liked it better if I hadn't read the book, but I wasn't impressed by the film at all.

I just finished reading the book, i saw the film first and i thought that the film tends to sugar coat things, like Roux ending up with Vianne, i wasn't expecting the ending in the book. The book also totally changes Viannes mother, in the film i was given the impression that the women travel with their children to spread the cocoa. But in the book you find out that her mum was a tarot card reader who travelled around America with Vianne. For people who have read the book, do you think Roux stays with Josephine or goes back to Vianne?

I saw the film first too and I'm so glad! I think if I read the book first I'd have found the film a bit sickly-sweet when the book is darker.
I got the impression he definitely wasn't going back to Vianne and their night was a once-off that happened by "fate" so Vianne would get pregnant

reply

Vianne and Roux do sleep together after the party, but its a one night thing and the book alludes to her being pregnant as a result. and when vianne gets the letter from armande after she has passed she wonders how she knew. hope that helps

i found jesus, he was hiding behind the couch the whole time!!!

After I finished the book, I didn't take it to mean that Roux and Josephine hooked up. I thought Roux was just living in Josephine's house.

But you should definitely read the book.

And I'm just about finishing up the sequel to "Chocolat", which is called "The Girl with No Shadow" (or "The Lollipop Shoes" in UK), and it's even better than the first book. Of course, the second book clears up many unanswered questions from the first book. You'll be addicted.

I have read both books and saw the movie countless times. I think the movie is one of the most uplifting and delightful films I have every seen. The music alone makes the film a delight. The film is only based on the book...I thought the first book was really good. The second one was ok but it took me a while to read it, however the ending was great. I agree you should read both.

I'll be looking out for it. The snippet at the end of Chocolat has really whet my appetite.
In the first book I get the impression that Vianne was actually snatched out of a car while her real mother was inside a shop.

when you've read the lollipop shoes, try the next book. vianne does have a daughter by roux and i've just started the next book 'peaches for monsieur le cure' and vianne returns after settling down with roux in paris. josephine has a son which she suspects that roux is the father. its turning out interesting so far

I'll look for it, thanks?

it was excellent. didn't get a shock when ines took off her veil though, i expected it, though acid attack burns was what i thought would be it. is it weird i kind of wanted joesphine and reynaud to end up together in the end?
