Irish Gypsies?

I only saw this movie once a long time ago, and recently stumbled upon something in a Google search that identified the gypsies in this film as being Irish Gypsies? I'm Irish and I didn't know there was such a thing and I find it intriguing. I plan on seeing the movie again, but does anyone know for sure that they were identified as being Irish? I thought maybe Gypsies were Eastern European in descent?

In the film Johnny Depp has a distinct Irish accent and he does say to Vianne and her daughter Anouk that the necklaces he sells are "the best in Ireland." However as far as I know though Johnny Depp and his crew are like gypsies they are not technically gypsies. It was never specifically said in the film that they were in fact gypsies, but I searched "irish gypsy" on Wikipedia and found a page about "Irish travelers". They follow an age-old tradition of traveling from place to place just like Johnny Depp and his crew do, so I think that's what his character was. I think people just assumed they were gypsies because they kinda look and dress like gypsies and also travel like gypsies do.

Here's a slinky, go play.

How can you be Irish and not know about the Irish travelling folk? Unless you mean the American definition of Irish i.e. several generations removed.

It is rather surprising. There was a movie some years back with Bill Paxton called Traveller based on the fairly large community of Irish Travellers in South Carolina. Quite interesting IMO.

there are lots of strands of gypsies. they are called gypsies because people used to think they were from egypt, whereas the original gypsies came from north india. there are travellers all over the world, irish, indian and eastern european are the most common

I'm from Ireland too and there's a very large travelling community here.
I've even seen Irish travellers in England.

And I don't know if you've ever seen the show My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, there are quite a few Irish travellers in that.

You're thinking of Romani Gypsies.
