why?

Because Da Ali G Show (2000) is the UK version and Da Ali G Show (2003) is the US version.

Because the original UK show (one season, 2000) was called "Da Ali G Show" - and the later US show (two seasons, 2003-2004) was also called "Da Ali G Show"

For the UK, presumably to reduce confusion, they renamed the US show "Ali G in the USAiii" - but the original UK show wasn't released in the US (IIRC) so you guys are stuck with the two-shows-same-name confusion - sorry about that.

Here's the breakdown:
* The Ali G character first appeared in an obscure UK "youth" show called "F2F" (1996-7) - these were very early outings for the character and the look and patter aren't really nailed yet.

* The character took off big-time in interview segments on a late-night UK comedy show called "The 11 O'Clock Show" (1998-2000) - a show which also introduced Ricky Gervais and Charlie Brooker. The original "11 O'Clock Show" interviews (and some "F2F" material) were released on a DVD compilation called "Ali G, innit"

* The character then got his own UK show, called "Da Ali G Show" (2000), which adopted the classic chat-show format with guests coming on to be interviewed, music breaks, etc. I don't think that show was ever released on DVD in its entirety (?) but there were DVDs called "Ali G, Aiii" and "Bling Bling" - which were "best of" compilations of clips from that show.

* Next came "Ali G Indahouse" (2002) - the theatrically-released movie.

* Then came 2 seasons of the US series on HBO (2003-4), which was also called "Da Ali G Show" - renamed "Ali G in the USAiii" for UK viewers.

After that, Sacha Baron Cohen moved on to new characters, like Borat and Bruno, saying that the Ali G character had to be retired because he was now too well-known to be able to interview people who were unaware it was a comedy act.

That's the Ali G story as I understand it. Hope that clarifies things for everyone!

Is the original UK show on DVD. I have checked Amazon and eBay with no luck. Not even an R2 release.

One episode from the US version has the exact same jokes from an episode of the UK version, it even has the same guest star in it (Travis, the guy who sings the song 'Why Does It Always Rain On Me?')
