Ok, it drags, but hang on to the ending... 7/10

With all the other negative posts here, I was reluctant to rent and watch, but after resolving to get into this period film, and not worry too much about authenticity to the novel, and to simply enjoy the music and costumes, scenery, etc., I actually enjoyed this film (can't really beat seeing Reese Witherspoon in most any of her movies, anyway). If it seems a little tiresome, just hang on until the finish - nice one! enjoyable overall 7/10

Lol, you have practically said everything I was feeling. People need to see this film on its own without book bagage or miniseries hangover. It's a nice film to see, lol, I also gave it a 7/10 and not only that Reese for once dosent make me wanna kill her, lol.She was suprisingly really good and practically out performed everyone.

That's very fair comment zeerine -
but perhaps it should not then have been called 'Vanity Fair'?

If they'd changed the names of the characters - you could almost have taken it to be another story.
I mean that seriously - and then I might well have enjoyed it.

If you make a film of a dearly loved classic book - how can viewers NOT compare it to the book?
It would be like changing Lord of the Rings to have the ring being used for good by Aragorn at the end - or something like that.

I personally loved the Indian scenes and the happy ending - maybe Mira Nair should have retold a similar story set in India?

Some readers get very passionate about what their books mean to them - just take a look at the Golden Compass board if you don't believe me!...:-)

I totaly get your point of view, I just feel that this is a god film and peeps need to just watch it and not read into its cmparisons with the book.
Lol, I've also had a book killed in film and pray that not any other books I like get kiled.
