becky and steyne

The first time Becky meets Steyne in her house he hands her some envelope and says "you don't want him back tonight" what was that for? for her to bail him out later or just some money for her to save? I was a little confused by that.

reply

He was talking about the repo man, he gave her money to help her stay out of debt so that they wouldnt come back for her stuff any time soon

reply

And a tidy sum of money it was, too! 1,000 Pounds! It could have been made a bit clearer that this is the same note that Rawdon discovers in the locked drawer and rips up later on...

reply

Then why did she keep the thousand pounds when they were so impoverished and why was Crawley so upset when he found it?

reply

Becky was keeping it for herself--she didn't want to use it paying back the butcher, her maid, but something only for her and in the event something happened and she was on her own again. Crawley was upset because taking money from another man strongly suggested she was indeed having an affair (men like Steyne don't go around giving out money charitably, they only do it if they think they will be getting something in return); and because she had this money sitting there the whole time they had debt-collectors pounding on the door, she had it the whole time Crawley was sitting in jail, and could have used it to bail him out. Instead, she let Crawley sit in jail while she amused herself with Steyne.

Come, we must press against the tide of naughtiness. Mind your step.

The note said "five". I guess over time she amassed a small fortune, but I don't think that was the time he gave it to her.
