Why didn't they have more children?

They really should have had more kids, because Melody sucks. Really though, Ariel comes from a huge family, and she and Eric love each other madly and are presumably shagging constantly, so what gives? You only had one kid in the 13+ years you were married? And no male heir to the throne, since this is late 1800s Denmark presumably? For shame.

What about a cute little redheaded boy? What about a whole gaggle of little human-hybrid merbabies? What if they had cousins if Ariel's sisters got married and brought THEIR kids to come see Ariel's kids?

What if the plot had been more along the lines of a cross between The Incredibles and The Sound of Music, with each character having different personal stuff going on in a climate of change and upheaval? Such as Triton's death or something. Does the crown go straight to Attina, the oldest sister (based on the prequel), or does someone challenge her for it?

Your thoughts?

Because it would be pointless for them to have more then one child. Why, because the focus would only go to one of them, so there would be no point in having any other children. Just like with Ariel, all the focus in the movie went to her. You rarely saw her sisters at all, and they weren't significant either.

You know they could make another movie and show that Ariel gives birth to a boy. You see I know some families who have had the case where they have given birth to one child and then over 13 years later another one is born. So what i think they could do is if we could convince the people of Disney to do it is make another Mermaid movie but have it to where Ariel gives birth to a boy and as the boy grows up his older sister tells him about her mistakes. Then have it to where the boy wants to see his Grandfather. Then have Ariel tell either Flounder or Sebastian to get her dad to come up with all of her sisters. Then have it to where when they come up also some other mer men come up that are married to Ariel's sisters and they show their young ones to her. Then her dad the sea king tells Ariel that over the last few years she has become an Aunt herself. That would be a good plot for another movie.

Eric got kicked in the nads by a horse just after Ariel gave birth. Now he only shoots blanks.

Birth control! I think Ariel realized that human births are a HELLUVA LOT PAINFUL compared to mermaid births (hence the reason why she had so many sisters).

I'm pretty sure the birth control pill wasn't even invented during the time Return to the Sea took place. Heck, I'm not even sure if the pill was even an idea yet.

There were other forms of birth control used back then...

Heck, my grandma told me she breastfed her third child till she was 6 just to avoid getting pregnant again. LOL, I don't think Ariel will do such a thing...but who knows?

Many they didn't need to. Eric may have been the second or third son and therefore not have had the same responsibility as the heir to the throne. Or maybe they do have other children but we don't see them, just Melody.

Eric: Want to try for a second one, honey?

Ariel: Are you kidding, and have another little independently-minded 'me' running about? Forget it! I'm getting my tubes tied!

Personally if my first born child was threatened by a revenge-seeking sea creature whose last words heard were "I'll find you and your granddaughter" then I wouldn't be too eager to give her more targets. That wall around the kingdom didn't even work to keep one kid out. Imagine more of them getting out into the water. Morgana could just pick them off one by one. I assume that's why they didn't have any more children. But maybe once they were safe from Morgana Ariel and Eric got back to the baby making.

That wall bugged me in the same way Randall and Dante in 'Clerks' talked about the downside of the Death Star's destruction in "Return of the Jedi.

If you get really serious, that wall put up in LM2 had to have paid with the kingdom's taxes. It basically became one of those city projects that failed, and in the end, Melody just wipes it out with her Grandfather's trident. Talk about throwing money down the drain.
