Canon or non-canon?

The story and animation had no depth, the colors were too bright and garish, the supporting cast was slapped together at best, and the horrid little beast that was Melody didn't help matters. In my opinion, it should be the latter.

Apparently, certain materials seemed to at least count portions of that movie as canon. For instance, the book where Ariel has to help out a trapped dolphin had the wall from the second movie. Plus, I see absolutely no point in their even making it if it wasn't supposed to be canon. I know if I were them, I wouldn't have even bothered making something like that unless it was intended to be canon.

EDIT: Just so things don't get misinterpreted, I do not favor the sequel. In fact, that movie was one of the reasons why I ended up becoming somewhat afraid of music. However, I also have problems fathoming why people even bother making extensions to the story if they weren't even supposed to be canon.

EDIT 2: Also, if I were Roy Disney, I not only would have declared it non-canon, but I would also have halted all production on that movie, as, since it was never supposed to be canon, there is no reason for it to be made. Even if it was simply for money, they shouldn't make it if it isn't canon. If they had to make it despite it not being canon, they would have at least added in a notice that it was not canon at all to the film, a little sticker, and it is a standalone with no connection to the first film and also not canon/a true sequel. I mean, Ghost Babel sold well despite it being a non-canon game to the Metal Gear franchise, same with the Ac!d games.

You do realize that Ariel actions in the first movie are rather selfish and that Melody looks like a saint next to her, right?

reply

If she were selfish, then she would have abandoned Flounder to his fate at the start of the film, among other things.

You want selfish, try Dr. Weil from the Mega Man Zero series. The point of being selfish is getting your kicks in doing things that you know only benefit yourself and cause suffering to others. Heck, I'll even supply you with a link:

Megaman.wikia.com/wiki/Doctor_Weil

For Ariel to be selfish, she has to be just as horrible as Dr. Weil is, since his primary reason for doing these things IS out of selfishness, feeling that "it's all about me" and all that.

reply

Being selfish doesn't automatically someone into a mustache twirling villain.

reply

Even if that true, she is still not selfish. She would have abandoned Flounder to Glut the Shark instead of putting her own life at risk if she were selfish.

And BTW, all villains, or at least the vast majority, are depicted as having selfish goals, and often take delight in hurting other people.

Considering how one book actually referenced the events of the sequel, I'd argue that it is canon (specifically, its where Ariel and Eric help out a dolphin that somehow got trapped in their castle).

reply

I consider it canon as well - although I like the sequel in a way, there are many things I wished they had improved.
