Much more than just a dumb slapstick comedy
This is an MST3K-like love letter to corny Asian chop sockey movies of the 70s, and their bad English dubs.
Kung Pow was my favorite guilty pleasure movie when it came out just for the goofy humor (a lot like Caveman which was the similar favorite of an older good friend at the time) -- but I appreciate it even more having recently watched several old kung fu movies out of curiosity.
They were hysterical watching them in the knowledge of how accurately Kung Pow parodied them. Even though this movie is a riff on Tiger and Crane Fists, I'm now certain the jokes must have been inspired by Bruce Lee The Invincible.
The exaggerated old man voice of the master, the beef-punching sound effects, heck, Betty's cow probably came right from Lee's fight with the gorilla. :)
