I was wondering when seeing this movie (and "La Nina Santa" by Lucrezia Martel) if the racist/degrading attitude towards indians is common in Argentina, or if she's using this to show the anti-social/uneducated position of the characters?
shareunfortunately, racism is common here. it's mostly directed against lower social classes, inmigrants from some border countries (Bolivia, Paraguay) and, in the northern provinces where the movie is located, indians. it's not an "organized" racism (like nazism) but a more subtle, despising attitude.
shareYes, its unfortunate, but what Lucrecia showcases is a faithful reflection of the kind of veiled racism that is rampant in ALL latinamerican countries, perhaps with the exception of Cuba.
Mexicans discriminate against Hondurians, Guatemalans, Salvadorians and Nicaraguans.
Puerto Ricans are racist against Dominicans.
Argentinians are racist against Bolivians (watch the excelent argentinian film Bolivia).
Chileans discriminate peruvians and argentinians, etc, etc.
Its quite sad really.
