Who's Finn and what happened to Malone in the series? Did he die? I know he went to the "spirit world" but he came back, then what happened?

She is from a future time on the Plateau.
(In the Summaries released by the writers, they revealed that Finn would turn out to be a great-great-granddaughter of Malone's.)
What happened to Malone in the series?
During Season 3 Veronica went missing for a while. Malone decided to set out to find her while 'finding himself', yada yada. (In actuality the actor had problems with his work-visa status in Australia where the show was filmed.)
