I loved 'Sidewalks of New York,' but I can't stand his other films!

This is the 1st film that I saw by Burns and really enjoyed it! The lines were realistic like a documentary and it felt natural. I had hoped that his other films would have been like this, but to my surprise, they were not even remotely as good as this. When I saw the commentary of "Sidewalks of NY" it was mentioned that a lot of the actors improvised, maybe this was one of the reasons why I enjoyed it. His other films are not in this docu style, maybe that is the only style that work for him. But besides the style, the other films just lacked substance and I'm sorry to say but most of his other films kind of sucked.

Funny because I feel the opposite. I watched "Sidewalks" last night and didn't care for it as much as some of his others. I think it was the faux-docu style he used. I would have preferred a straight forward narrative instead. Oh well....

I had the opposite reaction. I like the other films of Edward Burns (to varying degrees) but this one just left me cold. Aside from a standout performance by Brittany Murphy there was not much to recommend here.

So far I've seen four Edward Burns films and none of them have disappointed me. "Brothers McMullen" was a great film that thankfully was a huge success for Burns and jump-started his career. "No Looking Back" was an interesting portrayal of small-town America with a particularly awesome performance by Jon Bon Jovi. "Nice Guy Johnny" is a really good example of how indie film makers can still make solid films on miniscule budgets (which is something that Burns has always shown throughout his career), and this film is also great. In fact, now that I've seen it, I'd say this is his best of the ones I've seen. I'm looking forward to seeing "Newlyweds".

Granted, I've heard I should avoid "She's the One", but of the Edward Burns films that I've seen in my life, I think he's a great film maker who knows what he's good at and delivers on it.
