So Mia was like a mother to Lorelai....

Which is why she is mentioned in only two episodes throughout the entire run of the series, which are coincidentally the two episodes she appears in. She's never mentioned at any other point...? 😕

I'm pretty sure Mia was mentioned in other episodes, and while she only appeared twice, it doesn't mean that she wasn't a mother figure. Mia left Stars Hallow, if I'm not mistaken, so it makes sense that she isn't around much. It's also possible Mia stepped back when she saw Lorelai and Rory going to the Gilmores for holidays and whatnot, this might've happened before the series began.

She's mentioned very briefly a couple of other times, but I agree with you. Lorelai and Rory tell a fair number of stories from Rory's childhood before the series started, and it would be natural for Mia to play a role in more of them. We hear plenty about some other figures who never (Luke's dad) or rarely (Pennilyn Lott) appear on screen but still help shape a character or storyline. Mia probably should've been treated the same way.

Honestly, Mia seemed like a character they came up with on the fly to sort of fill a mentor/surrogate mother role Lorelai and Rory to help contrast with/cause some conflict with Emily. I'm fine with the writers bringing in new characters, even ones from the past, after the first few years of the show but there could've been a little more build up towards Mia's first appearance. It always felt a little less then genuine, the way they just dropped this supposedly beloved by all character in town that we never heard one mention of before and hardly any after.
