The size of Lorelai's house

So I know the house is 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms but I'm always "convinced" for no reason that the upstairs has an extra bedroom.

Probably because it's odd for a 2-level house to only have 2 bedrooms, when there are 2 bathrooms. Usually there'd at least be a study that could be converted into an extra bedroom.

Also, it just looks too big from the exterior to only be a 2-bed.

reply

I always felt like the placement of Rory's room was kind of odd: downstairs and right off the kitchen. That makes me think her room WAS the study (or maybe even a large pantry or storage room) that's already been converted. (I'm laughing at the very thought of Lorelai needing a pantry.)

I can never get a good handle on how big Lorelai's house is, but everyone seems to think it's too small for her and Luke after they get engaged. (Spoiler blackout added since I've been seeing some posts from people who are only up to S3.) And there ARE two-story houses that are quite small - I lived in one for a while as a kid. It was originally built as a summer bungalow. Come to think of it, Stars Hollow is the kind of tourist-friendly town that might have some summer bungalows. I think the idea is that Lorelai really scrimped to buy a house and found one that was comfortable for two, but no more than that.

(Hmm. Something kind of symbolic in that.)

reply

That's one of the first things I noticed started watching the show-the size, location, and price of her house. Stars Hollow seems like quite the pintoresque town, and with that reputation, that house must have cost a lot. I find it hard to believe that a woman who worked as a maid for a long time, never cooked, had an stylish and trendy wardrobe, was saving towards owning her own business, and had a child to raise on her own could afford a house in
this town. There is also the
issue of Lorelai neglecting to save, or prepare in any way financially for Rory's dream school.

The financial situation in this show is infuriating. The only character whose finances seem realistic is Luke.

reply

I know we're getting all sorts of different information, especially regarding finances, on the show. But their house isn't called the Crap Shack for no reason. I think we can assume that Lorelai bought it in a bad shape. We also know Luke helped her a lot.

Actually even Luke's finances are bizarro. After Jess buys a car, he says HE can barely afford to have a car on what he makes at the diner. Yet he can buy the building next door on impulse with no apparent problem. And lend Lorelai $30,000... with no apparent problem. He'd have to be a really successful diner owner to manage all that. Even very comfortably middle class people who feel like they're doing fine would have to weigh both of those a lot more seriously than he does.

reply

Finances on this show are better not thought about. It's all very contradictory.

In my view,Luke's situation was made more dire than it needed to be. He inherited his place from his dad, has no children, and no other expenses, except for maybe insurance. His lifestyle provides a lot of saving opportunity, unlike Lorelai who has a child, a house, extensive and expensive repairs, and has to save to open and operate her business. It's too much inconsistency for the audience to take in. I just can't take her seriously as an independent woman because she cobstantly needs to be financially rescued because of her lack of responsibility with her income.

In a house that large, there would definitely be more than one bedroom upstairs. Do we ever know what the other rooms are used for?

An interesting fact is that the exterior of this house was the house used for the Waltons. I know they used a set for the interior, but I always wondered how it worked when they showed the front door of the house open with the interior showing. It really looks like the outside and the inside of the house are all one.

Another interesting tidbit is that Lorelai's dollhouse was a replica of her house.

reply

I thought the Dragonfly used to be the set of the Waltons.

I got my info from the trivia section of the board

reply

When you google "Waltons house" I think you can see that it's the Dragonfly. It has a porch, and you can see the three gable windows.

Ok, I re-read the trivia notes. You're right, it's the exterior of the Dragonfly, not her house.

Glad to be of service.

I always thought it was weird that the house Lorelai and Rory lived in only had two bedrooms. There's no way that house that big only has two bedrooms, with one right off the kitchen; there's gotta be at least three upstairs. I mean, I lived in a place that was similar in size that had four bedrooms on the upper floor.

I mean, why would a parent want to put their toddler in a room next to the kitchen while they sleep upstairs? A 10 year old I get, but not someone in preschool.

Well, Rory was around 10 or 11 when she moved into that house.

reply

Yeah, but Gigi was like 4 and Chris wanted to put her in Rory's room.

reply

I think there was some sort of issue there. Christopher had to have Gigi in Rory's room.

reply

It made sense for Gigi to have Rory's room. Rory was living at college, and where else was Gigi supposed to sleep since there were only two bedrooms in the house? I felt more Lorelai was being the unreasonable one in this situation. She wanted everything done her way, instead of allowing for the changes that would naturally occur with marriage.

reply

Lol yeah how dare you Christopher wanting your daughter to have the only available bedroom! Rory was an adult and they could figure something out if she had to move back home. She was determined to always get her way. She could've at least compromised regarding the living arrangements since they had to live in her town and the house she remodeled with her ex.

What I find even crazier is that Sookie's house which is the same house as Lorelai's on the set (but they use front for Sookie and back for Lorelai) looks just as huge, and they are fine with two kids in the house. An addition in mentioned once, but never followed up on.

I always wonder why on Earth Lorelei even needed a house with only 1 child, no spouse or pets. Buying a 2-bed apartment would make a lot more sense considering the saving required for Rory's schooling and her business.

Buy hey - TV land, right?

reply

The house definitely looks too big from the outside to only have two bedrooms, with one off the kitchen? What the heck is upstairs, there must surely be at least one room that could serve as a bedroom. If not, it was totally selfish of Lorelai to protest giving Rory's room to Gigi. Rory was an adult and had moved out, if she needed to stay over then she and Gigi could share the room.

It's always sort of weird to me when people on TV live in huge houses or apartments that have way more space than they need, but whenever they get married and/or have a baby, they go on about how they need a bigger place now. Like Miranda on Sex and the City, who had a massive apartment and I'm pretty sure her baby had his own room until Steve moved in, then suddenly she and Steve had to sleep in the dining room to give Brady their bedroom and they were acting like they were living in a broom cupboard and so they HAD to move to Brooklyn. Whaaat.

reply

The house clearly has more bedrooms, but for some reason they liked the look and feel of the place so said it was what it was, when it clearly wasn't. Call it Hollywood magic...
