IMBD is disabling the boards 2/20

I'm sure you all received this message, as well. Bummer.

"IMDb is the world’s most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content. As part of our ongoing effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb, we have decided to disable IMDb’s message boards on February 20, 2017. This includes the Private Message system. After in-depth discussion and examination, we have concluded that IMDb’s message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide. The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic.

Increasingly, IMDb customers have migrated to IMDb’s social media accounts as the primary place they choose to post comments and communicate with IMDb’s editors and one another. IMDb’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/imdb) and official Twitter account (https://twitter.com/imdb) have an audience of more than 10 million engaged fans. IMDb also maintains official accounts on Snapchat (https://www.snapchat.com/add/imdblive), Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/imdbofficial/), YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/imdb), and Tumblr (http://imdb.tumblr.com/).

Because IMDb’s message boards continue to be utilized by a small but passionate community of IMDb users, we announced our decision to disable our message boards on February 3, 2017 but will leave them open for two additional weeks so that users will have ample time to archive any message board content they’d like to keep for personal use. During this two-week transition period, which concludes on February 19, 2017, IMDb message board users can exchange contact information with any other board users they would like to remain in communication with (since once we shut down the IMDb message boards, users will no longer be able to send personal messages to one another). We regret any disappointment or frustration IMDb message board users may experience as a result of this decision.

IMDb is passionately committed to providing innovative ways for our hundreds of millions of users to engage and communicate with one another. We will continue to enhance our current offerings and launch new features in 2017 and beyond that will help our customers communicate and express themselves in meaningful ways while leveraging emerging technologies and opportunities."

Such a bummer. I use these boards way differently than I use my social media accounts. I'm really going to miss them.

I think IMDb was tired of dealing with people posting links to Illegal downloads. I know that on this board we tried reporting several of them, but it was fighting a losing battle. I am really going to miss this bored and discussing GG with all of you. I am really bummed about it.

I'm so sad. Where are we going to go for exchanging our opinions? Previously.tv?

Ugh. This sucks. They should just shut down the boards for certain movies and Tv shows... I think it's such a shame. I've learned a lot from IMDB message boards. Heck, I learned English because of IMDB message boards. lol

reply

That's amazing

reply

This really stinks. Maybe we should find an alternate place to discuss the show together?

Ugh. This is so sad. I can't believe they're just shutting all the boards down.

The OTH boards were the first ones I ever posted on but the Gilmore Girls one was the one I really became attached to when I was younger  I loved reading all the different takes on Lorelai, Rory, Emily, and all the rants and range of opinions. I also loved how (mostly) pro-Logan and mostly pro-Chris this place was, I'm really going to miss that. Not to mention, this is one of the few places where I've met Jason fans. And people who don't act like Luke is the best man ever. Oh, man. I feel like, after the revival and now with the closing of these boards.....my attachment to this show really is coming to an end.

A rose is just a rose.

reply

Yes! This is the only place where people don't buy that Rory thinks of Luke as her dad. It's so nice that there are good, fair discussions about characters (and the writing), and without shipper goggles mucking things up.

Jason fans unite!

reply

Omg yes, I have these boards to thanks for sharing and developing that belief in me about Rory/Luke's bond being subpar.

Idk where I'll ever find Jason finds though. Most people (on tumblr especially) hate everyone who isn't Luke and find Jason creepy.

A rose is just a rose.

This royally sucks. While I don't use the board as much as I used to when I first registered in 2003! I do still regularly post..

I am guessing IMDB thinks the amoderation of the board is a hassle. On the other hand...They are losing advertising revenue and what will be the point of the App after deleting the boards.

reply

This sucks royally because it's yet another thing that pushes otherwise reluctant people towards using social media (which I refuse to do). I'm just gonna decamp to the AV club, Previously TV and Reddit.

These boards have been a part of my life forever. It's a shock because I've come to think of them as a cornerstone of the web, just like Wikipedia or Google.

reply

Ditto! I'm staunchly against social media and I've been using the IMDB boars for so many years. I'll miss you all!
