My Thoughts of Gilmore Girls after watching the first 5ish seasons
So I never saw this show when it was on the air but its available on Netflix and they have revived the show, and my old Chinese college buddy back in the day was obsessed over the show(she related to the Korean girl)
Since these message boards are getting shut down before I'm able to finish all 7 seasons, I'm going to comment on what I've seen so far after my first viewing.
So I feel like the series really didn't get interesting until the Rory and Jessie storyline showed up around season 3 I think? As far as the characters go, the mom and daughter relationship is really cute but I feel like at the same time, there should have been moments where their relationship had rough patches. I don't count those two episodes here and there where Rory wouldn't talk about her love life in front of Lorelei. On that note, this series is incredibly sanitized, and I went through episodes where I almost laughed at how something such as a protest would be scandalous. Jessie as the "bad boy" was laughable since I'm sure I've seen censored 1950s teen films that had guys that were worse than Jessie. Rory is way too perfect and I wasn't surprised she got the highest GPA at her private school despite conflicts with the story during those episodes where Rory was initially struggling in her English class during season 1. Lorelei's boyfriends were all boring and terrible, I was hoping that Jon Hamm cameo in that one episode would have sparked a return of that character because I thought he looked good with Lorelei, too bad they wrote his character to be boring. Thankfully as I'm currently going through season 5, Lorelei is dating Luke but pretty sad it took 5 seasons for it to happen. Don't get me started with Rory's boyfriends, that Dean guy has to be the most boring boyfriend character in the history of Television. I was happy when he got married because I thought they would write him off the show but unfortunately he got divorced and ended up with Rory again. I liked Rory with Jessie and wish that they had stayed together because Jessie at least had more dimension. Laine was probably my favorite character because it was the first time I've seen an asian american family was portrayed on a television series other than Margaret Cho's situation comedy back in the 90s. i'd be very curious if Margaret Cho ever commented on the Laine character on Gilmore Girls. I do like the cat lady(Sally Struthers) the dance teacher(Debbie Reynolds would have been super awesome in this role but she was doing Will and Grace at the time) and wish they were featured more on the series and incorporated into the storylines more. Taylor and Kirk are comic relief characters that run the whole town it seems but they are forgettable and dull. Anyway, these are just some of my thoughts and feelings I had with this series, I suppose I'm just not one of the targeted audiences
and I will continue on with the show until season 7, maybe perhaps there might be something more interesting to look forward to. Also Melissa McCarthy was great as a "best friend" role for Lorelei, it's a shame her role seems to diminish throughout the series.
One highlight of the show has to be the parents, I found them the most multi-dimensional ironically considering they are supposed to be materialistic snobs but they were certainly the ones that stirred the most conflict and Emily is probably my favorite character out of the series.
Okay I'm off the soapbox. I know the hardcore fans are probably on these boards so I might be harshly criticized on my opinions but I am honestly curious what people see great about this show.
Also random, but is it seriously season 5 and Rory is still a virgin?
