Alexis is not a good actress at all, but oddly enough; I can not imagine anyone else playing Rory.
I found her humor, acting shy/awkward/cute to be extremely fitting.
Watching interviews from those earlier times; Alexis is painfully shy. Like she doesn't even look up when she speaks. Rory is much more expressive and energetic; so I know she's at least acting for the part of Rory. They might be similar, but she's not playing herself.
Lauren is amazing, but you have to give Alexis credit for keeping up with her. This was her first ever acting job and she was only a teenager! A shy teenager in a city where she didn't know anyone, and the entire cast she worked with were much older than her. (Even her bestfriend Lane, the actress is about 10 years older than Alexis)
It's a lot of hit and miss with her. Not just in Gilmore Girls, she was fine most of the time; especially in the earlier seasons. (Her best crying scene : "I'm ready to wallow now")
A couple of her later movies are a lot better. She was really good in Violet & Daisy and Remember Sunday. Also in Tuck Everlasting, but that was again from her earlier years.
She's not as awful as, at the top of my head, Megan Fox... but she's no Natalie Portman either. She's just on the level of other mediocre pretty women in Hollywood, there are plenty of them around.
