not a single original idea in the entire film
I mean, I don't feel that I just completely wasted 2 hours of my time, but from a movie rated this highly I certainly expected better.

I found this movie to be overly stylized and dull. I quit watching after twenty
minutes, I could not take any more. I gave what I saw a 3.
Yes, Equilibrium picked ideas from many sci-fi books and movies but it borrowed them in a careful manner and what it set out to achieve it did well. The movie is brilliant fun!

To the OP: Are you a girl/woman?
This is kinda a guy movie as it mostly involves awesome action. Probably the average woman wouldn't like something like Predator and that's a great movie.

He has a brain and uses it. This movie is terrible. Never compare it a classic like Predator. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes would be a better comparison, but even that was a more coherent movie.
[If someone left ''1984,'' ''Fahrenheit 451,'' ''Brave New World,'' ''Gattaca'' and the Sylvester Stallone potboilers ''Judge Dredd'' and ''Demolition Man'' out in the sun and threw the runny glop onto a movie screen, it would still be a better picture than ''Equilibrium,'' a movie that could be stupider only if it were longer.]

Whoa, buddy!
I am FEMALE, and I love this film (and others like it).
And, to other posts:
** SPOILERS **
Let's see / I can't remember seeing a film where:
1) Someone called a Grammaton Cleric shot his partner while his partner (who has awakened to his emotions) was reading a book on Keats' poetry.
2) Cops shoot a fenced-in area of dogs and can't understand why rebels would want dogs (maybe to eat them?) while a Cleric saves one, with an excuse that the pup must be tested for potential disease that may be present in the Nether.
3) A little bottle of perfume is evidence against a woman accused of a sense crime.
4) A Cleric used gun kata to kill cops to save a puppy in the trunk of his car.
And, so forth.
Other related themes of piggish tyranny, elitists killing others for something they feel entitled to, the burning of books and other forms of art, the thinking that absolute consensus/conformity is a good reason to give up personal freedom, etc., can't be stressed often enough in stories and films, IMHO, and even films that exposit such themes are not original in their expositions as they are inspired by, and taken from, real-life events.

Over stylized.... Dull...
Look up Oxymoron in the dictionary...
You need to look up "stylized" and "dull".
[stylized past participle, past tense of styl·ize
Verb
Depict or treat in a mannered and nonrealistic style.
dull
/dəl/
Adjective
Lacking interest or excitement.
Verb
Make or become dull or less intense: "time dulls the memory"; "Albert's eyes dulled a little".]
There is no contradiction there.
Now I see the caliber of intellect required to enjoy "Equilibrium". Next time I hire someone the last question I will ask is; "What do you think of the movie "Equilibrium""? If they like it, then I will know not to hire them.
Thanks for the life lesson.
For someone who didn't like this movie you are putting a lot of effort in the boards of it. Also nearly every post you need to offend any person that did enjoy the movie.

Thank you for proving my point.

You weren´t here for a year and still feel you have to talk trash, put me down and proof my point. On top of that you let others decide what films you watch.
I did not fail, but someone did.

So what you are saying is in fact, you only watch the movies that make the top 250 list. Those have the right critics, otherwise there is no way they make it to the list.
And I am pretty sure in that list there is more than 1 movie that you don't like. It's ok you didn't like this one, but a 7,6 rating means a whole lot of people liked it pretty good.
I am not a fanboy, seen loads of better movies, but the s hitstorm you are giving them is uncalled for...
Even your description is nothing new. It's from the Bible.
Ecclesiastes 1:9
What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.
What we have here is failure to communicate!share
Name a movie that has an idea (or a near variation of it) that hasn't already been used in a dozen other movies already? No, movies today are about execution, not originality. I found thee execution in this suprisingly enjoyable. (My brother made me watch it with him and he has bad taste so I had low expectations)
But I do concede your point.
I think Charlie Kaufman's screenplays were absolutely one of a kind (Eternal Sunshine, Being John Malkovich). Sure, we may have seen *elements* of them elsewhere before, but on the whole those films were completely unique.
That's just one example.
Memory loss and seeing the world through someone else's eyes are both pretty old concepts.
What we got here is... failure to communicate!share
The point is not necessarily to have an entirely original setting, it is to do something with it, which has not been done before. That is where Equilibrium fails - it goes nowhere, where 1984, Fahrenheit or Matrix have not been before. There is a tiny bit of originality when it comes to his son, and had the movie followed that idea, maybe it would have been more interesting. But in the end they made it a movie of some guy killing other guys before they can kill him in some stolen setting.
