7.6 on IMDB, 37% on Rotten Tomatoes?

And an 82% RT audience score? Seems like a HUGE discrepancy between the critics and audiences on this one.

For the record, I just saw it for the first time on Netflix. I liked it, although I imagine in 2002 its tone would have been viewed as being EXTREMELY derivative of The Matrix, especially with regard to the soundtrack and how it "kicks in" during action scenes.

It's not the first film that's gotten significantly more love from the audience than the critics. Another example I can immediately think of: The Butterfly Effect.

Adam Sandler movies. Billy Madison has a big disparity.

I like it, but it's far from flawless.

I think critics were to eager to dismiss it based on it's shortcomings though.

Wimmer was a rookie and it showed. He had a lot of really good ideas that probably would have been translated into a better film by a more experienced director.
