If they have no feeling???

Then why do they get angry and yell when they catch a sense offender?

reply

why even bother to question a movie with more plot holes than a jumbo swiss cheese...waste of energy my friend...

Great feedback. Thanks for the input.

LOL,

This film lost creditability within 10 minutes. So after that I just said oh well. and just went with it.

1) The Fathers "Passionate" speech at the beginning. He seem to be really enjoying himself at the end.

2) People standing up and applauding his speech. That was the death nail to this movie right there. So at this point you have to start making excuses as to why all the emotion they did show was just fine but not the emotion that could get you killed.

I really do believe they had a good time making this film. I can just imagine them trying to hold back laughs galore with some of the lines and sequences.

I assumed the act of applauding was because of duty rather than enthusiasm.

reply

That would still be emotionally-based, though, right? Duty is something one feels. It's an obligation. You have to feel an obligation. 

reply

I disagree, you can still be forced/told to do something and not feel any emotional response to it, they were all brainwashed after all, just sheep, it was probably just programmed into them.

Some would say a bit like the regime in North Korea. I don't, but I mean that as an example

reply

For that matter, why wasn't Christian Bale's character immediately suspicious when his new partner grinned like a Cheshire cat?

reply

Read the novel 1984, if you haven't already. I do agree with you that it seemed a little odd, but with 1984 in mind, it did sort of make more sense.

reply

Good question.

There was an awful lot of emotion overall for a society that is supposed to have suppressed and outlawed it. I find it best to enjoy the movie for what it is and not look too deep into the (somewhat sparce) plot mechanics.

reply

I would say the drug only reduced the extremes of emotion.

It removed empathy and rage, but allowed for a level of aggressiveness, annoyance and mild amusement.

Thats probably why so many people were still emotional as the drug wasn't really that effective and the main reason why the society was still heavily militarised to fight against emotion.

reply

The drugs don't take away emotions they just mute them a bit. But everyone is still feeling to some extent.

As you saw by the end, Brandt wasn't taking the medication at all since he was Father's right hand man. Or if he was taking them, he was taking them to get high. Notice how he goes on and on about adjusting his dose.

The reason why Preston never noticed Brandt's emotions at the beginning was because he was already suffering from depression because he had to kill his last partner. Apparently his distress was so strong it completely negated the effect of the medication. Immediately afterwards he stopped taking his dose. So for the whole of the film, Preston is completely oblivious to the rest of the world and completely inside himself experiencing pain, depression, longing, regret, love and lust. So Brandt was completely able to hoodwink him.
