This is one of the reasons i hate the film, its because Mandras is portrayed as a nice guy who is willing to help to win back the affection of Pelagia but is left heart-broken and this is wrong because it just makes Pelagia look like a cheat!

In the book this is completely different, Mandras leaves for the Army and because he cant read or write never returned her letters (which is true in the film), so returns the first time to make her read them and she lies on the last letter claiming she is still in love with him, then he goes away a second time and learns how to read and write and then realises her last letter is one that expresses she has fallen out of love with him, so he returns a second time to express his anger and then tries to rape her after beating her, she shoots him with the derringer her father gave her and he goes to the beach to die.

he never saved Corelli from the Masacre (that was a local hero called Versallias sp?) and he never helped him escape the Island before the germans found him (A British Spy helped him with that).

Also it is never expressed in the film Carlo's immense love and honour for the captain and how he was gay and would do anything for the life of his captain which is why he protected him in the shooting.

just read the book because as usual, it is always better and more understanding than the film. i wont tell you the real ending but it is much more heart warming (and equalling saddening) than that of the cheesy hollywood one in the film.
