Hollywood Version of Mediterraneo?

I personally liked everyone in this film -- save Nicholas Cage -- although once the movie got underway, I had this funny feeling that I saw this film before, 10 years ago to be exact. "Mediterraneo" mirrors the the plot in this story to the T, and was done more convincingly and realistically in my opinion. There's just something off with how Mussolini's Fascists are portrayed in this movie as romantic operatics -- it just doesn't comport with history. Mediterraneo, however, was a little more realistic. Does anyone have any pro or cons regarding how realistically events were portrayed between these two films?

I can't say anything about the historical accuracy of these movies, but for sure Mediterraneo doesn't abuse of italian stereotypes...

Your question about how realistically events were portrayed between Mediterraneo and Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Each side has it's own version of history. I have read Italian histories of WWII, and they pull out all the stops, giving themselves credit for world peace because they caught Mussolini and Carla before they got away. The Greeks give themselves credit for world peace because they single-handedly fought BOTH the Germans and the Italians to a standstill.

It's sort of like "Shakespeare in Love." The guy who plays the nurse--I can't remember his name--decides Romeo and Juliet is not a tragedy about the love of two teenagers from families who are enemies, who accidentally die when they cannot have one another. It is about a nurse.
