Haven't seen it but how come all the reviews are awful?

Because it commits the crime of turning a great novel into a simple film, reducing complex themes into a schmaltzy love story. Plus it has the unforgiveable element of everyone speaking English with Greek or Italian or German accents. The irony is that Nic Cage is an Italian American and yet makes such a bad job of being an Itaiian.
