Test - do Europeans like and Americans dislike this film?

I've never understood why so many people seem to dislike this film. I think it is good. Is it really Cage's accent that ruins it for so many? In that case I'm glad that English is not my first language, and that I haven't memorized how Caeg normally talks. The description of the love stories of Mandras, Pelagia and Corelli are very well done, I think.

I'm European. (British). I don't think it has so much to do with European v American sensibilities. I think for a lot of people (including me) who had read and loved the book it was a disappointment. Impossible to really do justice to a 400 page book in two hours. The book was a fantastic mix of war story/love story and had you laughing/crying within a few pages. The ending was also regarded as a Hollywood-style happy ending, when the book was very different.

Cage and Cruz are great actors but they are miscast here.

I'm European-American (mother European) and didn't read the book.

I thought it was a poor film, although done with very high production values.

The plot, characters, etc. were all formulaic and easily predicted.

It may have been a great book and/or true story but it came out as just another expensive piece of Hollywood fecal matter imo.

P.S. I think Americans would tend to like the film more than Europeans because the film was catered to their tastes (ridiculously crude American stereotypes of Europeans for example).

Love the book, hate the movie. The director raped the book, the movie should have been aborted. Kapitein Corelli's Mandoline is mijn troostboek, for those of you who understand Dutch. The 'scripeteers' who adapted this wonderful novel don't understand anything about Greece, Italy and what WW II ment for the south of Europe. The don't understand much about humans, either.
Please: ignore this movie, read the novel instead!
