who in the providence was not in on the conspiracy?

It seems like a lot of people knew what was going on. A ton of peaseants. The entire upper crust and local church leaders. probably some prositutes since the bordello was info central.

Since peaseant women and children were he victims how was the cat not let out of the bag? (soory about the oun).

I think you mean province.

Only a select few from the upper class, plus those associated with Jean-Francois' hunting lodge, were part of the conspiracy.

Sylvia was a secret agent posing as a prostitute in order to gather intelligence about the "Wolves of God". The rest of the brothel were not necessarily aware of the conspiracy.

Thnaks for the spell check.

Let me ask the question another way.

It appears 20 to 40 peaseants were involved. The body count was at least that many. For nearly three years, they watched their friends, neighbors, and relatives get slaughtered so a few upper crust folks who wouldn't say hello to them could have a means to an end. What was their motivation?

Agreed all of the brothel were not necessarily aware of the conspiracy, but it was a place were men talked intheir sleep. They prbably were able to piece something together.

The peasants involved looked to be gypsies, where as the peasants getting killed are the local villagers, and historically speaking, there has been many hostilities between the two groups (but not necessarily actual fighting).

Agreed. The non-nobles involved and killed by Fronsac are Gypsies (that is to say, outsiders) and are shown to reside in the hunting chateau under Jean-Francois's command. Not too much of the village is shown, but the women shown being killed are representative of the victims, who have nothing to do with the Brotherhood.

Yes, several nobles are part of the Pact, but several also aren't. The Countess de Morangias is a member, but her doofus husband is not. Father Sardis is the founder of the Brotherhood, but the Bishop of Mende (his boss) seems to be unaware of its existence. Monsieur Laffont (the administrator) is in on it, but the Duke of Moncan and the elder Marquis d'Apcher aren't.

As for the brothel, Sylvia the Italian was the only one that seems to be aware of the big picture. The other prostitutes would sleep with anyone who pays, but she sleeps with men who will provide her with information--except Fronsac, who she subtly manipulates into doing all the dirty work :)
