I missed the last few minutes of the movie, what happens at the end? Does Marianne die?

Like the previous poster says, Fronsac gives Marianne a Native medicine from Mani's wristband (like Mani did to a kid earlier in the movie). The young Marquis opens the window, and when the camera pulls out, we see him as an old man - the narrator in the beginning of the movie. The Marquis says he never heart from anyone again, but loves to imagine Fronsac and Marianne as having traveled to Africa and other journeys - however, we never see Marianne wake up, so whether of not she died is entirely ambiguous.

Then, he tells of how he and Fronsac went to the beast's lair, where they found it severely injured. The old caretaker tells them how Jean-Francois came into possession of a set of cubs, and trained the strongest to be obedient and vicious, using cruel methods. Fronsac pets the dying beast; the beast licks his hand. Then he shoots it out of mercy.

Back in the "present", the old Marquis walks out of his castle, where he is arrested by the angry mob. We're not told explicitly, but presumably, as this is the French revolution, he will be beheaded. The end.
