theatrical vs. director's cut

anybody know the difference made in those ten extra added minutes?

reply

Those were mainly in the middle of the film. Character developement scenes I think. The theatrical cut doesn't exist anymore in France so it's hard to remember the differences.

The major difference that I am aware of is at the very beginning of the movie. The fight in the rain where Mani manhandles everyone so easily in the theatrical version is extended in the director's cut to also show Grégoire taking part in the fighting.

This doesn't add a lot of time overall to the director's cut but completely changes the feel, as the surprise the audience receives in the theatrical version when Grégoire finally shows off his fighting skills at over halfway through the movie, is gone - having been witnessed in the first few minutes.

I haven't watched it in a long time but that's the thing that I remember the strongest as, in my opinion, the director's cut takes a significant portion of discovery away from the viewer. I may go back and watch it this weekend. If I do I'll post up the other differences.

This fight extension isn't present in the Director's Cut that I own from Canada (and which the US release is based upon) but it is included in the deleted scenes section along with other scenes that are missing from even the Director's Cut of the film.

The director's cut has an extended middle section, involving intrigue surrounding Fronsac, Sylvia, Marianne and her brother.

All of this is detailed further in the link provided below.

You're right. I went back and watched it and wondered why I had thought it was in the DC and then I viewed the deleted scenes and found it along with the commentary about why it wasn't included in the final cut (or the DC).

It completely changes the movie not having it included.

I agree with you (and the Director) that it was a wise choice to snip that scene extension from all versions of the actual film. It does make the ending more powerful.

That was one of the most badass fight scenes I have ever seen. That was simply awesome!

I can't believe the british censored part of it because of "animal cruelty" ...

The British can be censor crazy at times... especially when animals are involved.

I was confused when they released the Director's Cut here in Canada, as I already owned the 3-Disc Collector's Edition; and when I found out the time length for the DC, compared to the one I owned, they were the exact same, 152mins. I don't get it.

It's been a while since I saw either versions of the film so anyone can feel free to correst me if I'm wrong.

The Main things I remember from the theatrical release were.

The scene in the middle where Fronsac and Thomas are testing guns on pots in the garden.
The scene where Fronsac is creating a fake beast from a real wolf for a cover up and the showing of the fake beast at the end of the film.
