That Fronsac could fight? We saw his shooting skills but that was it.
I remember thinking after Mani died, that they were in deep doo doo. Then Fronsac appears with the face paint and proceeds to out-Bourne and out-Braveheart with a level of vicious killing.
Anyone else see this coming / guess he had skills?
I did not think he had those type of skills, but in retrospect, it was not surprising.
Incidentally, there was originally a much longer fight scene at the beginning ... much longer, and it displayed Fronsac's prowess in melee & hand-to-hand fighting. I am glad they decided to cut it, because not only did the scene go on too long (IMHO), it left us to be more surprised and impacted when Fronsac heads off to avenge Mani.
I am pretty good with twists in most movies, but I never saw that one coming. When I saw him with the face paint, I thought 'what's he doing, he can't fight......oh....yes he can!'
The deleted scenes showed a much longer version of the first fight. The director said they only showed the beginning of the fight. In the deleted version both men got off their horses and fought. He said it took two or three days while being rained on and that the main actor was bitter that all his work was nothing.
He said the deletion was necessary because they went from the fight scene to having him being a fop among a bunch of rich people. He said the extended scene was too much out of character for what followed.
The deleted scene was great though but like the director and others have pointed out, it detracted from the story and the decision to cut the scene helped set up the big surprise of Fronsac being a great fighter.
True, it was a necessary cut made to keep the element of surprise much later on in the film towards the very end. Fronsac being like the; "The Scarlet Pimpernel" a rich nobelman who has a secret identity and life as a rogue with tremendous fighting skills and daredevil type hero etc. Who real life persona is seen only at the climax of the movie.
Its like saying Mani was his Kato to his Green Hornet (series and comics not the 2011 movie mind you?) if one wants to make a reference and analogy to the events of this great movie as it unfolded etc.
Both could fight but Mani was the man of action and *workhorse* and Fronsac the brains! But the 'brains' of the two of them was left with little choice, once his friend was killed so he had to fulfil both roles and finish the job they started out together with.
