Hey! First I'd like to say that it's my first contribution to this board!!! ;)I'm French and a true fan of American cinema. Why? I, among other things of course, love action, thrills, and good sfx. And when it comes down to this stuff, Hollywood, even if it's one time out of 10, gets the job done and offers the world great enjoyable movies, even if it's among a pile of awful crap. I tell you this because I'm not a huge fan of French cinema in general (except our comedies), but sometimes true gems DO make a difference. Believe me when I tell you that these flicks can hold their own against the very best US productions! ;-)

If you want a good solid action packed thriller, check out "Nid de Guêpes" (The Nest). In for a great horror flick?(MUCH better than 90 percent of the US production): "Haute Tension", "A l'Interieur" (Inside), "Martyrs". Be careful, these movies can be quite traumatizing... No 2nd degree here!! Other films you should definitely check out: "Un Prophete" ("Prophet") This 2009 thriller/drama is huge in France, it depicts life in prison with gritty realism. The cinematography is stellar and the cast is top notch. "Contre Enquete" is also a very gripping thriller that you should watch!
If you enjoy these let me know, there's more!

You should check out Taxi, the French original to that awful Queen Latifah/Jimmy Fallon movie. It's got humor and style to boot, and it was written and produced by Luc Besson. It spawned three sequels, of which all but the last hold up to the first. (Oh, and Marion Cotillard gets naked :)

La Vie En Rose.

A 2007 French-Canadian biographical film about the life of French chanteuse Édith Piaf. I recommend this movie to anyone.

You can also try Vidocq, a movie I greatly enjoyed.

I like Vidocq which is about an actual person (check wickpedia) and also The Crimson Rivers, Crimson Rivers has Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel fighting each other and also Nazi super men (and women) in remote French mountains.

Yes I was just about to suggest Crimson rivers as well. It also has a sequel, which is still okay but not as good as the first. And if you really like those two, another Jean Reno movie called Empire of Wolves.
