Maybe she was about to die of broken heart. He learned about the truth. Her parents just tried to kill her. Her brother (and parents) was involved in all the killing, even worse, was the one that controlled the beast. Not to mention that her brother swore his love for her right before he raped her. Pretty tough on the nerves.

She dies, according to the director's commentary. The scene were Fronsac and her are on the boat at the end is just a dream for the narrator. He says something like "I imagine they went far away" or something.

I agree with Zauberer's assessment.
It is the director's opinion that Marianne died, but the ending of the film is much more ambiguous.
In regard to his sister, the dying Jean-François says something like "You have united us forever" to Fronsac. When Fronsac gives her the medicine from Mani's bracelet, it never shows her actually waking up and recovering. Therefore, assuming that she is dead and the last scene of the film is the Marquis' wishful thinking is plausible.
However, it is also just as plausible to assume that Marianne was eventually revived off-screen and really did live happily ever after with Fronsac in Africa.
I thought BOTW/LPDL was pretty awesome, but I am iffy about the ending. I think it would have worked better if it was more cut-and-dry, making it clearer if she lived or died. I suppose it was probably a little too bleak and depressing to have the villain murder the main character's best friend and love interest, which is why there is some ambiguity. Plus, everybody likes a happy ending.

Exactly. I've stuck with the 'she survived' story, even after the director's comments. It would just be too depressing otherwise.
shareWell, since I don't speak or understand French, I have no idea what's actually said by the Marquis d'Apcher at the end of the film, and I've never watched the film while listening to the English dubbed track, so I have no idea what's said there either, I only have what the subtitles say to go by ... and they certainly make it sound as if she lived.
It's definitely the ending for Grégoire de Fronsac's and Marianne de Morangias's story that I prefer. And I sure don't see how having her die at the end would make for any improvement in the storyline.

Probably physical trauma due to extreme chock (her parents trying to murder her and her brother raping her).
"I want a frisbee made of Mexico."
This shows how genius this movie is.
You like a happy ending ? Here you are, they on both going to see world having sex and produce alot of offspring, wooptidoo.
You dont like a happy ending ? Here you are, the chick is dead and the marquis is just dreaming a selfdeluding story to ignore the pain.
And they both work :)

I would have preferred a more definitive ending, because in reality, you're either dead or alive.
If she dies, then don't patronize the audience.
Actually, given the narration of the story, she would have to have recovered.
Otherwise, the narrator would have said, "I have no idea what happened to Fronsac," rather than "I have no idea what happened to THEM." If Marianne had died due to the scene we saw, he certainly would have known about it as he was in the room. There would be no mystery about her fate.
Of course, not speaking French, I had to make do with the subtitles and the English dubbed version, so in the original language, that quote may have been completely different.

He does also say he was offered to come along to Africa, a comment that makes no sense unless it actually happened. So I tend to think they both lived off in Africa.
