How the hell did they get gene hackman in this film....

He should've stayed clear of this one. And since we are talking about gigli, how did they get al pacino and christopher walken for that film?

They didn't "Get" Gene Hackman (and in the same vein, they didn't "Get" Pacino and Walken for Gigli), in the connotation you use it in. When a movie is being made, from the script to the screen, it's damn near impossible to tell if it's going to be well-liked by the moviegoing public - you film and you pray. You write and act and direct and produce and hope to God that somebody validates your career by going, "That was a great movie, I am fully justified in having paid 12.95 for it!", in the very least. The folks who made this movie (and, yes, even Gigli) felt they were making quality product. RARELY do people set out to make a movie that will piss people off or annoy them - at some point, somebody, somewhere, thought every movie made was a good idea, and somebody agreed with them. I, personally, thought The Mexican was pretty well-made and well-acted, and it was nice to see folks like Gandolfini doing their thing outside of the 'standard' parameters.

Then again, I saw "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" ten times just to see El Mariachi back in action. Maybe I just like movies set south of the border.

Yep, you said it....lots of different reasons and 9/10 are connected to cash.
The ones who suffer are of course the 'fare paying passengers' who cough-up hoping to see an excellent movie featuring their favourite stars.
sadly almost 70% of movies (for me at any rate) fail to live up to expectation.
Can you blame the stars? well yes to some extent but money is a big influence no getting away from it. And there is no answer as far as I can see, just pot-luck on the film being 'good enough' at the end of the day.

Does he have a big part in this film? I'm trying to collect all Gene's films and sadly this is one of them. (which I haven't seen yet)

No, Hackman shows up in sepia toned flashbacks and doesn't have much involvement with the movie at all. It's worth seeing for the best role Gandolfini (a worthy successor to Hackman as far as charismatic character actors who can play leading roles goes) has had outside of The Sopranos. He's fantastic.
