says on the trivia page he was forced by contract.
He says on the DVD that he loved the script and the fact that he could finally work with Julia Roberts.

So, I wonder what the truth is. I also saw on the trivia page that he didn't want to make the film.

Even if he loved the script and was tempted by the idea of working with Julia, it doesn't mean he thought he was the right one to play Jerry. The worst thing about the film is that there is absolutely no romantic chemistry between Brad and Julia. They're like friends, but that's it.
