Does anyone know why the movie flopped?

The cast is filled with talented and well established actors. The movie received mostly positive reviews. I get the story may not be for everyone, but I do not even remember this coming out or even seeing a trailer. So when I did see the movie I was surprised that I never heard of it being that it was an above average crime thriller. The movie's story maybe somewhat off putting, but I would not think it would bomb the way it did. Does anyone else have any answers?

read the trivia section, it states the studio wasn't happy with it, thus giving it a limited theatrical release

Considering how many high budget movies are flopping. I am surprised they did not even attempt to give it a wide release. It was as not a high budgeted. It just seems like the studios did not even care to lose money if they put it in limited release.
