Not to ask a dumb question but is that an actual card game or was it just an inside joke as they all knew Kilmer was going to get killed?

It was an inside joke they set up. To let everyone know they are going to kill someone.

Macabre sense of humor. More precisely they all knew they were 'going to try to kill Danny'. Unsuccessful plan as it turns out.
