That was Cypher's struggle in the first film: do you accept reality, harsh though it is, and live in truth, or do you enter into a state of favoured denial?

According to Cypher, it's worse. Of course I guess this depends on where you are living in the matrix. If you live in a society where your life is constantly threatened or have to fight for survival, the real world is probably similar to the simulation they gave you.
