Dude, I agree completely. When I saw it back in 2001/2002, I absolutely hated it. I remember the movie being painfully over board in how ugly Costner's character was here.
Now I watch the film and appreciate it as a great bad movie, complete with an oddball cast, cheesy writing, over-stylzed direction and momments of pure dumb writing.
(A dude swinging from a ceiling shooting guns in every direction only to be diced in literally 2 seconds)
I think I like how the film was comfortable with being ugly, mean, and goofy at the same time. Some of the humor made me chuckle actually. Make no mistake, this is a complete dumb fun guy movie. It helps if you like violence, machoism, poor man's Tarantino writing, and of course Elvis.
Not the worst flick I've ever seen, a little overbashed, but I understand the negative feedback entirely.
