Was this movie supposed to take place in the '70's??

I don't know...Cox's character definitely had a 70's vibe going on...with the clothes and hair...even redeemless sexuality....and the main male ensemble themselves- of course you don't know what decade THEY are from because they could be anything from 2000's wannabe rockabillys to actual recent Elvis mourners...does anybody have a clue about when this movie is actualy supposed to take place? I couldn't sum it the whole way through...thanks in advance, if you are serious about this film's origins...

Did you see the machine guns they were using at the end? The lawyer had a cell phone... anyway- maybe you are thinking of another movie.

Are you saying they didn't have Machine Guns in the 70's? You're an idiot.

the FN mini belt fed kevin costner was using at the end went into production in the 80s. But I also got the 70s vibe with all the old cars being driven. The 59 caddie, the old Plymouth valiant, and the old dodge police car the cop was driving. However, kurt russel did jack a new dodge ram and there were a bunch of new cars in it.

I think the movie's production designer just wanted to give the movie a retro vibe using vintage cars, off-beat wardrobes and set pieces.

The movie certainly takes place when it was filmed given the obvious things like cellphones, modern Las Vegas, some of the cars and trucks used etc.

The movie took place in the same year it was made - 2001

you've obviously never stopped off at some of the small towns and roadstops along the way to vegas. a lot of them look and feel like they are stuck 30-40 years in the past

the look and feel of places like that is one of the only realistic/accurate things in the film

reply

It was a present day movie with a 70's vibe. I kinda liked it.

I never got the impression this movie was set in the 70's. Looking past main characters and the Elvis convention the fashion and vehicles you see here and there are the most obvious giveaways. Even without that though it just doesn't "feel" like it's supposed to be 70's imo. It just sort of has a style of it's own.

Back off! ... Way off!

a guy in the casino said how Elvis has been dead for over 20 years....which would make it anytime after 1997.

reply

Although there are some 70's style looks to the film... Despite the modern day technology in the casino and other areas of the movie... Just do the math: Costner & Russell are in their mid to late 40's in the film. It is implied they both believe they are elvis' sons. If it took place in the '70's, even 1979, then you subtract even just 40 years, it means Elvis would have had them in 1939... When Elvis was 4 years old. Just one more confirmation to add to the others that have already been mentioned.

In addition, Thomas Hayden church's character mentions that costner's character was arrested in '88 and released in 2000.

reply

Really no it would be taking place present day I would be, I remember one of the guys in the casino that was speaking bad about Elvis Preskey said he has been dead for 20 years now, which one he might not have been keeping up with the time, and if that would have been the case Elvis Presley would have died in the 1950's when his character was beginning.

reply

Michael was born 1955, he would've been in his late teens-early 20s if it was the 70s. Also Elvis died in 1977, leaving this to supposedly be between 78-79 which I doubt it. 3rd in the very beginning, the Italian manager said Elvis has been dead for over 20 years.
