Why did the servants act the way they did?

They knew Grace and her kids were ghosts right? So why didn't they tell them what was going on right from the start? The way they went about it in the movie seemed more of a plot tool to keep the audience guessing rather than something that makes sense. Maybe they wanted to slowly let it settle in? I loved the movie but found that really bizarre.

The way I understood it, the servants weren't supposed tell them and had to let Grace and the kids figure it out for themselves.

It most likely was a plot tool, though, because I never guessed it.

Guess it all has to do with the way they died. The experience was so sudden and maybe traumatic that clearly the boy and the mother were very reticent about "what happened". If the servants would had straight told them they were dead already, they would had been immediately disposed, and the defensive and negationist attitude on the family would be stronger. By not telling them at first meeting, the servants created trust or at least respect ties with the family.

BTW, freaking awesome movie really; guess I'll post that every time for the following 7 days.

Grace and the children died in horrific circumstances being a murder/suicide. The servants were there to assist them to make the transition and come to acceptance.
