Was the devil and the angel working together?

I was just thinking back to the scene at the end of this movie where the devil was playing chess with the angel. When the devil saw Elliot with Nikki she pointed him out to the angel who looked at him and smiled. Were they working together? Was this 7 wishes thing all part of a plan to help Elliot find love?

This is an extremely deep philosophical question. I think there are whole courses devoted to this issue.

Let's just say that since the devil is actually a fallen angel there IS a connection between God and the Devil. Using the metaphor of the chess game simplifies the struggle the 2 go through in vying for our souls. In reality though it is Free Will that determines our fate. Eliott chose to be selfless for Alison's sake so God won fair and square and the Devil knew that. But, their 'chess game' continues in the never-ending battle between good, evil and free will.

Winners don't even know they are in a race. They just love to run.

But it was in the struggle between Good and Evil (or in this case, between Redemption and Adversity) that Eliot developed his character and escaped the purgatory of his loveless friendless ego-less life. In many pagan traditions, the arch-rebel (e.g. Prometheus) is the friend of man. At the end of the movie in the courthouse scene, Eliot said sincerely to the Devil, "you are the best friend I've ever had."

I don't think they were working together, I think this scene just further emphasized Liz Hurley's speech...

Sorry, it's been a number of years since I've seen this, but it's right after BF makes the selfless wish and he gets out of the contract...

She says something about it not being about good or evil...that it's about choices or something...

but yeah, I think her and God playing chess together is to reenforce that fact

yeah, this movie is deep and... what do you call it? underrated? notice elliot's cellmate (a role which people i see also have a variation of interpretation of) has a lighter and cigarette with him in the jail cell, i don't have jail time experience myself but that looked strange, and as the cellmate appears in the end playing chess, him (who people interpret to be an angel) and hurley's role really seem to get along well, he even smiles as he catches hurley moving around the pawns as he looks away.

like youre not alive at all,
still a painting i so adore,
but you freeze,
i try to but youre still,
since you turned off charming.
