I thought he was supposed to be God
- JRB
I thought smoking and swearing were sins.
Yet in the cell, he says "S***" and he smokes.. ?
Yeah i think hes God because at the end we see The Devil and him playing chess representing Good and Evil?

Neither smoking nor swearing is a sin.
shareYes it is ' Thou shalt not blaspheme'
Ps i thought the guy playing god was handsome and very fair.
Blasphemy is not one of the seven deadly sins, so it can't be too bad. "Taking the name of the Lord thy God in vain" is a prohibition or an admonition - "thou shalt not" - from the ten commandments.
You can make a damn good case that the proper translation of the original Hebrew is a commandment against perjury, since taking God's name in an oath[*] was and is perfectly proper, depending on how you interpret Jesus' Sermon on the Mount.
[*] The "good" kind of oath, like in a courtroom, not the bad "kind" - an offensive or rude expression.
If you throw out all the uselessly circular definitions for blasphemy, such as sacrilege, irreverence, etc, you are basically left with disrespect as a useful definition. If you want to think saying something like "goddam traffic ticket" is disrespecting God, you are free to do so of course, but it makes just as much sense to regard it as invoking the name of the Almighty to show how deeply you abhor the traffic ticket. Questionable judgement, perhaps, but hardly disrespect.
I don't remember seeing the commandments that say "Thou Shalt Not Smoke" or "Thou Shalt Not Say Sh*t."
shareAnything you do to harm your body is considered a sin. Smoking harms so that makes it a sin.
Happen to fall off a cliff. Might as well try to fly.
You're completely full of sh*t.
shareWell the "devil" shows some human emotions towards the end which kind of contradicts him being the pinnacle of evilness so I don't see why god can't contradict himself sometimes.

shareunder the logic by that guy it couldnt be jesus because being in jail is bad.
The whole point of that scene is to show the message that answers can be found from anyone, anytime, and at anyplace. Its up to you to find them.

In the audio commentary by the director, Harold Ramis says that he is an angel.

Or at least that's someone's interpretation.
share[deleted]
Maybe that is some particular contemporary "Christian" sect's interpretation. Until not that long ago, smoking was considered to be a healthy habit. Take a look at magazine ads of only 50 years ago. Some people thought that smoking increased their intelligence, others thought that it soothed nerves and increased concentration.
It's ALL interpretation and has nothing to do with religion. And much more to do with corporate profits.

Its not a sin for God or Jesus to smoke or swear.
He's taking the knife out of the Cheese!
Do you think he wants some cheese?

Agreed, Documentary. Gabriel Cassius could get ME to call him God anytime, or at least call out God's name very loudly :P His smile alone makes me weak at the knees. And I don't care that the director calls him an angel, he acts like God not one of His subordinates. And why would the Devil be playing chess with a mere angel, even an archangel? It's Good vs. Evil, so if its not a demon but the Devil herself then his character has to be God.
shareFrom watching it, it seems the dude's an angel. He's not God because, as anyone who's read the bible would know, God wouldn't give two sh*ts about Elliot.
Sayonara, not to be confused with cyanide, which is, of course, goodbye in any language.
How cynical!
John 3:16 shows how much God loves Elliot.

My favorite passage of the Bible. The theology of Christianity summed up in one sentence.

shareSmoking isn't bad for you. Cigarettes are bad for you. Pure tobacco isn't near as harmful as the *beep* they put in cigarettes.

No he was not. He is credited as an angel, both in the listed credits, plus the director specifically states he is an angel in the commentary.
