Theory?

The end of the movie never really made much sense to me, maybe I just wasn't really paying enough attention. He meets a girl that looks exactly like Allison, but it's obviously not her. I always looked at it like one of those things that I just scratch my head at and think "well, that's interesting I suppose", but never really had a definitive explanation of the scene.

The other day out of nowhere this theory just kind of struck me, and I wanted to see if anyone had the same opinion....

Like Elliot, Allison was not happy with certain aspects of her life, as revealed from her diary. So it got me to thinking that possibly Allison was presented with the same deal from the devil, and the scene we see at the end with Elliot and the "Allison lookalike" is really one of Allisons wishes, hoping to meet a nice, sweet guy as she'd hoped. And to further that theory is the fact that Elliot's last wish was for Allison to have a happy life.

Thoughts?

Interesting. But I would think the devil would try to mess it up like she did with all of Elliot's wishes.

I think she just looks like Allison.

Nice theory, Vukota12, but I agree with Mickyfinn. If it were one of Allison's wishes to the devil, they wouldn't end up well. Also, she would know him already.

Nicole is "just" a doppelganger. Like that was a simple coincidence from the prison black dude.

Except ... right before that scene, we see Elliot finally getting up the courage to talk to Allison. And she tells him she's "seeing someone." Remember? So... having this "lookalike" exist to fulfill her wish sounds like a bum deal for her. They both exist at the same time.

I don't know if I've lived 10,000 days, or one day 10,000 times...

Wow, that's a stretch I think...

But not a bad one. I could live with that theory.

Interesting suggestion, but I don't think it quite fits. The Devil was always doing her best with each of Eliot's wishes to pervert what he had asked for and make it a failure -- why wouldn't she do that with Nicole as well? She's not there to grant their wishes, she's there to frustrate them and use up their hope so they run out of wishes and she can claim their souls.

And the second thing is that, at the very end, we see Eliot and Nicole stroll past the Devil playing chess with the Angel that Eliot met in the prison, and the Angel smiles at seeing them -- if this Nicole was one of the Devil's ploys, I don't think he'd be smiling.

I think Nicole was Eliot's wish being granted when he least expected and just trusted in Life. She looked like Allison, who Eliot didn't actually know, just admired the look of, but she was someone he got to know easily and who wasn't already involved. Maybe it was simply some kind of reward for his selfless act.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

it was the same actress though right?

i think they did it similar to Night at the Museum 2, where coincidentally they just have them end up with a look alike played by the saem actress...

I never thought of that! Very interesting theory. Although in the timeline Elliot is in when he meets Nicole, Allison is in the same one...with someone else. So if Nicole was just Allison in one of her 7 wishes, ccould another ''Allison' exist at the same place and time in his life? I am not sure if it is possible.

But consider this...what if only Elliot notices the similarity Nicole has to Allison, seeing what he wants? To someone else Nicole and Allison are not so similar, but Eliot sees her soul, and to him it is Allison. But not her. I think Nicole fits him better personality-wise, something he figured out from his wishes. Plus to fulfill his last wish that Allison have a happy life, it means not with him. The sacrifice earns Eliot a happy life too, which is all he wanted anyway.

I think it is a fun movie and it makes a valid point...be careful what you wish for, you just may get it. Or at least be very, very specific...

I personally think that Nicole and Allison are either strangers that look alike (albeit just exaggerated) or are simply identical twins separated at birth into different families.

I always thought that since his last wish was for Allison to have a nice life, the devil turned her into Nicole.

At the beginning, ELLIOT's co-workers tell him she's seeing someone. THE DEVIL had nothing to do with that. Everything ELLIOT went through didn't change that. He deserved a prize for doing the right thing (the self-less wish about ALLISON being happy) but, since ALLISON was unavailable, he met a woman who looked like ALLISON and also that had a lot in common with him.

Here's my theory about the entire movie:

God and the Devil do work hand in hand in some things. Read the story of Job to see what I mean. Elliot is a guy who pines for a girl who is supposedly out of his league and goes to far as to wish for it by claiming he'd do anything to get her. At that moment, the Devil in the guise of a hot woman(I'm assuming it takes the form of whatever it needs in order to seduce whoever they need to seduce) strolls into the bar and says she can grant Elliot anything he wants then gives him an out when he asks for proof, the Big Mac and Coke, a chance for him to think she's nuts but even though they took the bus to get it and made him pay for it(which was another clue that she was going to F with Elliot), he was still intrigued.

So, Elliot starts wishing for stuff; wealth and power, sensitivity, athleticism, popularity and intelligence, nobility, etc all in an attempt to get this girl for himself, all of which, even though he does have that girl in some form or another, the Devil subverts his efforts leading to failure until it was time for God to instill some wisdom into Elliot when he sends his angel to talk some sense into him. Eventually, Elliot stops thinking of himself and wishes Allison has a happy life hence voiding the contract, freeing Elliot, hopefully with a hard lesson earned.

Then Elliot goes home and sees a new neighbor moving in, a girl who could be Allison's twin sister. Eventually they fall in love with each other and live happily ever after. In the end we see the Devil and the Angel playing chess together laughing it up. This is because they were working together to show Elliot that not only that good things come to those who wait but that Allison was never meant to be with Elliot but Nicole was proving the Angel right when he says everything that happens, happens as part of God's plan.
