What would this be like in the modern world?

The key to this film by setting it in the early 1900s was that the world still had some mystery to it; so what would it be like if Atlantis was discovered today?

In this movie, they decide to keep it a secret to protect the city. In the sequel, Atlantis rises from the seas again. What would happen if today Atlantis suddenly rose out of the world and said "Hey everyone, we're back! What did we miss?"

Men go to jail. DOGS GET PUT DOWN.

Oh you pose a good question...

Since this is Disney, i'd say that if this movie took place now and Atlantis rose from the Atlantic, The Avengers would have to be called because someone (probably Loki) would try to steal the crystal in order to take over the world.

However if your asking what would happen in real life if Atlantis surfaced, i think all hell would break loose as every country would want Atlantis to be there friend which would cause a war for friendship.

I agree with your first scenario.

Except instead of a war to become their allies, I think it'd become a huge tourist trap and scientific/historical research hub.

In a movie: I can imagine it being discovered and the humans being captured by the Atlantians and made to participate in their rituals. Then it will turn into an 'Escape Atlantis' scenario with only a few escaping to tell the tale, while the city sinks deeper into the sea.

Real Life: After a week of talks, news will filter out that they tried to attack the humans and had to be detained - Truth is we didn't trust them and overpowered them for testing and quarantine. Then the nations will fight as for who can claim Atlantis.
