I thought it was representing his innocence, and how he had hurt those around him by allowing himself to become corrupt. Im sure there's others who have a better interpretation then I do.

He was cold hearted. He hurt them by his callousness. He is always away from his family, hence the daughter calling out "I want my daddy". With distance the heart grows cold.
