Simply NOT Hellraiser

*Spoilers*

This movie was harmed more by being a Hellraiser movie than Deader was. I say this because the direction taken by turning Hellraiser into a psychological thriller, and a weak one at that. They would have done better to take any Hellraiser element out of this one. Since when do the cenobites punish people for "sins"? Since when is Pinhead a lofty, preaching judge of morals? Isn't this the same "demon" who was portrayed as a ruthless murderer in Hell on Earth and Bloodlines (both crap movies as well, I might add). Whatever happened to "You opened the box, we came; now come with us and let us tear you apart." In this movie, its "Welcome to hell. You're here because you're a bad, bad guy. Oh yeah, and also because you opened the box. But that doesn't change that you're a bad, bad, guy, so therefore you're gonna get a hooks n' chains facial..." If people think Rick Bota is defiling the franchise, just imagine if Scott Derreckson signed on to do a few more sequals instead. *shudders*

I'd say this guy has a pretty good arguement. I am not intelligent enough to continue with it though.

Basically, he wishes it had more of Pin Head. And other stuff...

(told you i wasn't intelligent enough)

Yeah..so true..The cenobites weren't even told to be from Hell back in the day.
It was just later put in. Clive Barker's stories are much about the same stuff
that happens in the book Hellbound heart. And one of the suggested titles for
hellraiser 1 was "Sadomasochists from beyond the grave", if I remember correctly.

have you not seen "conan the barbarian?"
as cerebral as it gets, a multi-layered coming-of-age story about love, friendship, loss, father figures, what truly makes a man, revenge,
considered by many to have the greatest musical score ever created, aiding a visually rich film with wonderful cinematography and fantastic scenes of violence and gore,
a masterpiece to those who know it well, a dumb action flick to morons

Because we all know that someone's taste in music (Which is entirely subjective) is a good indication of whether or not they make valid arguments about a movie's quality. -_-

To be honest, this movie isn't very Hellraiser like at all. The story as far as my opinion goes ended with Hellraiser 2. Though Bloodlines was a more valient effort than Hell On Earth. I think the creator of Inferno just wanted to make a story based on what he believed to be part of the Hellraiser mythos. Instead of trying to expand the original story. Unfortunately this image of hell is alot different one than what we are shown and told in Hellraiser 1 and 2. The story telling, feel, music, and even the special effects are very non hellraiser-ish. We are definately seeing "another side" as someone would call it of Pinhead than before. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad, if it wasn't for the fact the movie feels like a complete waste of time. Since nothing is accomplished, and nothing is explained that we already knew to begin with.

To sum up the movie I could just go: It's about some guy who I myself didn't care much to begin with. He does something bad (oh wow, how many times has anyone ever done that?), even though it's not like the worst thing you could do. Then abunch of bad things happen, with nothing good coming from any of it. In the end he sees the effects of the bad things he did lead to. Then realizes it's too late to do or change anything about it. The End

It's the kind of story we've seen several times before (a version of this story is even in Tales from the Hood), but somehow found its way in the Hellraiser series. Straying a path far its original source isn't something that hasn't been seen before even in other horror sequels. Although they were alot more original than this.

There is the idea of selling out your conscious. Strangely a movie I saw recently (Jigoku 1960) was about a guy who did just that and went to Hell. He intentionally did bad things, with no remorse behind doing them. He obviously enjoyed doing these bad things, and would not stop doing them. Then when he went to hell he was tortured (in a way you'd see in Hellraiser), but even then he seemed like he enjoyed it to some extent.

I dont understand why pinhead cant be a sinister evil murder, moral judge and ultimate sadomasochist all at the same time.
Same here. One of the things I love about the series is that so far (I haven't seen 6, 7 and 8 yet--I'm about to watch them over the next couple days) they're trying to do something different with each film. While I also like horror series that follow a formula more or less (like Friday the 13th films), I think the Hellraiser approach is a nice change of pace.

Is everyone in this house a total nutzoid or is it just me?

It's certainly a different take on the Hellraiser films, but I actually thought this movie worked a lot better than III or IV: it was actually pretty scary in parts, Pinhead was less more of a mysterious character and it was much better paced than either 'Hell on Earth' or 'Bloodlines'.

I agree that Pinhead's character is different in this film, but as it doesn't use any of the other film's characters or settings then I don't feel the need to contest it. The essence of the Hellraiser films still exists in this movie's universe: Pinhead is the ruler of people's personal hell and is summoned once the box is opened. As a stand alone film, I think that it's a very well rounded, worthy addition to the HR series.

Different box. Different purpose.

It's the only good sequel to part I & II, the others are from average to mediocre, even if this one don't start as a Hellraiser, I thought it had lots of suspense and great horror effects, a must for die-hard fans !!

reply

I agree this is a far step out from the traditional Hellraiser style we're used to, but I thought this was a fantastic movie. This is also the first to emphasize emotional anguish over physical torture (though that element is still there).

I started the movie not expecting much, because sequels tend to progressively get worse and worse, but this was a pleasant surprise.

I'd agree with the idea that this is a departure from the
original themes and characters that made Hellraiser 1 & 2 what
they were. But I also think this movie was the best in the series
after those. Maybe they should have made it totally unrelated,
but I try to enjoy the movie for what it's worth and not think
too much about why the heck Pinhead is punishing naughty people
and giving out heavy-handed moral messages.
